About FAP
Online since September 24th, 2006, FAP is an art community for furry artists and connoisseurs. You can use FAP to share your works with the entire furry community, make new friends and enjoy a bounty of furry work. It's a new way to discover and share art — and we think it's perfect for people like you.
Content on FAP is created by our many talented users and is categorized through tagging. Think of tagging like a super-flexible-dynamic sorting system: instead of using set categories (taxonomy), we let our users create their own categories (folksonomy, or tags).
Back to topWhat are those symbols in front of usernames?
- × Banned account: banned users can't make comments, blog entries, or submit new works and are stripped of all browsing privileges.
- * Premium user: these accounts recieve special features that guest users do not, including larger thumbnails, more images per page, and a gross of other lovely features.
- ♥ Power user: frequent taggers and rampent commentors are rewarded for their awesome contributions with this special symbol, and the ability to tag works as mature.
- ♠ Developers: users that have applied for an API key and use fAPI to create applications for FAP users are awarded with this symbol.
- β Beta user: gets to test out all the lovely, new, exciting, un-tested and potentially dangerous features of FAP before they're released onto the public.
- $ FAP Officer: these guys make sure everything is going groovy within the community of FAP. They help maintain tag cardinality and can help mediate conflicts between users.
- € FAP Warden: oversees officers to ensure the highest of quality in public relations. They also have the power to block abusive members.
- £ FAP Governor: one of the highest ranking officials on FAP, the Governor keeps Wardens and Officers in check and makes sure FAP progresses as a community.
- ° FAP Curator: this is the guy that created FAP. He does all the backend code work, front end design, and is actually a really groovy, hip guy.
How does flagging work?
FurryArtPile.com is a massive online art community which provides free and immediate distribution for lots of art each month, subject only to our Terms of Service. Our flagging system empowers the users of FAP to identify inappropriate works for speedy removal, much more effectively than our staff could ever do, while preserving everyone's right to unfettered free speech within the law. If a work receives enough flags it will automagically be removed, with a note sent to the poster (only one flag per person per work is counted).
Works that meet our guidelines and Terms of Use may be reposted.
Back to topBrowser Support and FAP
We're still doing browser testing, but Firefox 1.5+ and Internet Explorer 7 work.
Back to topWhat HTML can I use on FAP?
To help keep FAP safe and secure, HTML tags that don't close properly or contain attributes will be ignored. The following HTML tags are allowed:
<b></b>, <strong></strong>, <i></i>, <em></em>, <u></u>, <del></del>, <strike></strike>, <blink></blink>, <ul></ul>, <ol></ol>, <li></li>, <blockquote></blockquote>, <cite></cite>, , , <code></code>
These HTML tags can have attributes in this format:
<a href=""></a>, <acronym title=""></acronym> and <abbr title=""></abbr>
You can also link to users and tags with these FAP codes:
:userusername: and :tagtagname:Back to top
What are tags?
Works on FAP are organized with tags — categories created by you. The result is a simple, fast and precise system of categorization without the limits of set categories, allowing you to quickly and easily find what you're looking for.
If you don't get it right away, that's OK — you don't have to. Tagging is pretty intuitive and can take some practice to fully understand. Try it and experiment a bit! There are no wrong tags.
Back to topWhat the heck are PowerTags?
PowerTags are tags with special effects that change the way your works are displayed. These tags can only be applied by the original artist and moderators.
- Works tagged as mature will be hidden from minors and guest users. (What is mature?)
- Apply the draft tag to unfinished works or sketches to keep them from obscuring your finished, refined works.
- Use the featured tag to display your best works on your userpage.
There are also a few tags that are automatically added by the server when you submit a work:
- userusername where username is the user that submitted the work.
- favbyusername where username is the user that added the work to their favourites.
- typeart for visual works, typeprose for written works and typeflash for animated Flash works.
- Colour pallet tags, including colorblack, colorgrey, colorwhite, colorred, colororange, colorbrown, colortan, coloryellow, colorgreen, colorblue, colorpurple and colorpink.
Use these specialty PowerTags to conqur FAP with your advanced tagging skills.
Back to topWhat search operators work with FAP?
FAP supports several advanced search operators that change the way your search is performed, helping you find works easier and faster:
+A leading plus sign indicates that this tag must be present in each work that is returned. (Eg, +typeart +female will find all visual works tagged as female)-A leading minus sign indicates that this tag must not be present in any of the works that are returned. (Eg, typeart -mature will find all visual works that aren't tagged as mature)> <These two operators are used to change a tag's contribution to the relevance value that is assigned to a work. The>operator increases the contribution and the<operator decreases it. (Eg, feline >cat <lion will find works with cats, but not lions)~A leading tilde acts as a negation operator, causing the tag's contribution to the work's relevance to be negative. This is useful for marking noise tags. A work containing such a tag is rated lower than others, but is not excluded altogether, as it would be with the-operator. (Eg, feline ~cat will find works containing lions, tigers and other felines, but not necessarily cats)*The asterisk serves as the truncation (or wildcard) operator. Unlike the other operators, it should be appended to the tag to be affected. Tags match if they begin with the tag preceding the*operator. (Eg, usere* will find all works from artists with names that start with the letter e)
When should I use the mature tag?
Any work tagged as mature will be hidden from minors and guest users. Thusly, the mature tag should be applied to any work containing:
- Nudity: Any and all nude works need to be tagged as mature, including artistic nudes.
- Drugs: This includes legal drugs like alcohol and cigarettes as well as illegal drugs.
- Extreme violence: Blood sports, genocide, guro and gore.
- Adult themes: These are things you wouldn't want your mother to catch you doing.
When in doubt, use the mature tag. Failure to properly use the mature tag can get your works removed.
Back to topWhat every user needs to know.
- Some content on FAP is for adults only. You must be at least 18 years old to view this content, and by removing the mature tag from your tag filter you certify that you are at least 18 years old. If your state or country that you live in requires you to be older than 18, you certify that you are of a proper age to legally view the mature content on FAP.
- You cannot post art by others anywhere on the site without their explicit permission for you to do so. This means that commissions and gift art may be posted only by the original artist unless the original artist gives you permission to post them. Always include the original artist's copyright with works that aren't your own.
- Plagiarism and art theft are prohibited on FAP. You may not post tracings, direct-copies, or manipulated works without permission from the original artist.
- Mature photographic works are prohibited on FAP. FAP is first-and-foremost a furry art website. Photographic works should only be of sculptural, costumes, mural or works that cannot be scanned in.
- FAP has very high community and etiquette standards. As such, flames, chain letters and derogatory statements are prohibited and may result in a ban.
- Any work where the condition or quality of the file takes away significantly from the overall piece is not allowed. FAP users are expected to maintain a certain level of quality in their works. Submitting works without intentionally cleaning up dust, lines, adjusting levels is not cool and can get your work removed.
