She's an officer on "the island's" police department. She also happens to be Flamewing's ex-girlfriend.

Neph (as most close to her call her), like Flamewing, is hot-headed. Of course, it's in a much more liberal way. Being somewhat of a feminist, she's always taking up cases against women with a fervor rarely matched by anyone else. But feminism isn't the only cause she follows: she's also in support of immigrant rights, and hates how (furry, etc.) corporations have all but consolidated most of Earth's resources. She is, for all intents and purposes, a hippy.

How Flamewing and Neph ever hooked up in the first place is anybody's guess. But they did, the broke up, and are now forced to work on the same floor. Needless to say their current relationship with each other is... strained, to say the least.

Considering her views, she's is more inclined to help out humans who are escaping Earth, and thus, gives a much warmer reception to Alex than Flamewing. (Some may argue that she's the only thing that has kept the dragon from smothering the kid in his sleep.) Still, she can't always be there for him, and there's some trouble that only Alex can deal with...
***

I first got the idea for Neph when looking at Wolf' Kidd's "Showjackal," and began to imagine her making out with some kind of dragon behind stage. Though to be honest, she's actually a combination of Kidd, Dark Aldebaran, and Moonstalker studies, along with this statute, a copy of which is at my local museum:

http://www.moma.org/collection/brow.....p;sort_order=1

*Half-whispering the next thing:*
If you combine the right side of this with the left side of Flamewing's sheet, YOU GET A SURPRISE!

Anyways, copyrights on pic.

Tagged as: jackal, refugee, mature jackalrefugeemature Refugee Characters: Flamewing by *alexkl5 http://www.furryartpile.com/view/34897/ Fri, 02 May 2008 13:08:14 -0700
Artist commentary
***How much you wanna bet that FA has once again shrunk and thus destroyed the pic?***

Meet Flamewing. Flamewing is a dragon. His exact species and race, along with his past, aren't mentioned very often. It's not so much that he's secretive about it, but it's that he'd rather focus on the "nows" of life.

The type of profession he pursues is "contract warrior," which is mainly his way of fancying up the title of "bounty hunter" and "mercenary" (both of which are universally unpopular). For the time being, he is working as a hired hand for "the island's" police department. Still, there's a lot of opportunities out there.

As far as personalities go, Flamewing is...less than perfect. He's hot-headed, rude, and at times, narcissist. He loves guns, hates hippies, smokes, drinks, burps, farts, drinks from the carton, and leaves the toilet seat up. All in all, he's frat boy who decided to knock heads for a living.

EDIT: Whoops, I almost forgot. He also sleeps around.

Despite all of this, certain circumstances are going to lead to Alex being his ward...

************

Anyone who knew me from 10 years ago, will recognize this as being my first avatar. Like I've stated before, I've recently moved away from him in an effort to be more "honest" with myself.

The irony of this is that I think I've made him more colorful that he ever was as a second me.

Oh, and you'll find out what he's yelling at when I get the next character sheet finished up.

As always, Copyrights are in the pic.

Tagged as: dragon, refugee, dragonrefugee Refugee Characters: Alex by *alexkl5 http://www.furryartpile.com/view/34896/ Fri, 02 May 2008 13:06:48 -0700
Artist commentary
Obviously, most stories need characters, so I figured I'd start introducing them...

Meet Alex. Alex, being from what used to be Earth, is obviously a refugee (and thus, the title character, though he won't be THE main character).

Like most refugees are, Alex is both scarred on the inside and out. He's seen what most refugees have seen: death, destruction, hopelessness, the law of the jungle (among...other things). The very fact that he comes to "the islands" (our story's setting) in one of the most desperate ways possible is enough to show us that he has had enough of it.

Considering he's made it this far in the game, Alex obviously has some tricks up his sleeves. Still, he's just a kid, jumping headfirst into a whole new universe of races, customs, and cultures that, until recently, his own species has been fighting against. Fitting in will be a chore, to say the least.

...
I started with this character mainly because in addition to being a character in a story, I'm giving him another role, since someone asked me recently to give a description of my avatar...

Yes, I've decided to have a human avatar. Ick, I know. (Though for those who've known me from a decade ago, I used to have a dragon named Flamewing.)

But I feel that in a way, I'm being more honest with who I am in Alex. I'm not trying to reach the unreachable.

Still, I'm scared to death of having him become a sort of "Mary Sue" in my story (I've seen countless examples of this used, and have repeatedly promised myself that "No, this won't happen to Alex."), and I've tried desperately to make sure that isn't the case. Yes, he has abilities, but I've worked hard to give him noticeable flaws as well. (But after reading about mary sues or gary stus in wikipedia, I'm afraid that nothing I am doing can tear him away from that, since the definition has become incredibly broad.)

Hopefully though, the grand finale can absolve him of that sin, since you see, Alex will-

...well, I can't really give the ending away, now can I?

As usual, copyrights are in the pic.

Tagged as: human, refugee, humanrefugee The Refugee Prologue 15 by *alexkl5 http://www.furryartpile.com/view/31109/ Tue, 26 Feb 2008 19:11:03 -0800
Artist commentary
...time passes...
...the bots "evolve"...

No real comment on this one. Despite the fact that shading usually fixes it up, the initial sketch looks alwaysa looks so bare, and it's a struggle to leave as is. Again each day was in 2 hour intervals.
This is mainly because the only time I can draw is usually at night when my parents (yeah, I still live with them : / go to bed. It's too oisy otherwise, and my room is usually in a hideous state. Due to my mom's sleeping troubles, she tends to be a light sleeper, and can't have me come creaking up the stairs at 2:30 in the morning, due to her public school job. Meaning, whenever she wakes up (usually at around 12:30 or 1:00), she then flashes the downstairs lights, signaling me to come up.
That usually gives me about 4 hours in reality, but due to my procrastination (and my fear of messing my artwork up when I start working on it), I usually get sucked into an episode of the Daily Show or Law and Order, SVU. As such, it sadly dwindles down to 2 hours (mind you, it's a habit I've been trying hard to break).

This piece, like most of my other pieces, is only about 5x5 inches in size, if even that.

Again, Copyrighted Karl Gruehn, except for Shawntae's Hunters...

Tagged as: draft, draft Refugee Behind the Scenes by *alexkl5 http://www.furryartpile.com/view/14288/ Wed, 04 Jul 2007 18:58:03 -0700
Artist commentary
Behind the Scenes...

...bah, I hate that idea. Making something like this always exposed people's overconfidence with their work. (At least, that's what I think.) Remember all those "behind the scenes" specials on E! about movies that hadn't come out yet? And then it turned out the movies themselves sucked? Like "Gigli" and "Batman and Robin" behind the scenes specials. Personally, I consider them an act of vanity.

..but Calafin had pointed something out to me in my last journal entry. He talked about how he was cool with daily or even weekly installments of comics, as long as they weren't far and few in between. Which confirmed my suspicions: I'm probably losing potential fans due to the long waits between my submissions.

So I figure that it would be probably better to show people at least ONE example of my drawings as I worked through them. First, because it'll get me posting more frequently, and second, maybe it will show people exactly why I'm so slow to post and what I'm up against...

Anyways, the following is a piece of Part 12 of my Refugee story. The end product for this part will have 10 drawings in total, and this is the first, in sketch form. I usually don't ink until I'm done with all the sketches.
This piece took me about a week to complete, with me drawing on each day in 2-hour intervals. As you can see, notes are attached in case I make any sort of mistake or want to add or tweak something later in inking...
The entire piece is actually only 8 inches wide, 4 inches high.
This is Copyrighted Karl Gruehn, of course, except for Shawntae's Omega bots.

Tagged as: draft, draft The Refugee Prologue 11 by *alexkl5 http://www.furryartpile.com/view/11300/ Thu, 10 May 2007 14:00:47 -0700
Artist commentary
...yes, that's right, the robots invade us; mankind gets a swift one to the crotch.
Everything that mankind has and will ever hope to achieve: our governments, or economies, our societies, our religion...
...has just been destroyed.

Deal with it.

(First time I've used Photoshop to color; this piece was a pain, along with the fact that I had to use super-imposed photos of the landmarks themselves to help me out...
> /
Copyrights are on the piece...)

Tagged as: anime, mature, animemature The Refugee Prologue 10 by *alexkl5 http://www.furryartpile.com/view/11299/ Thu, 10 May 2007 13:59:16 -0700
Artist commentary
The best laid plans of mice and men...

*Cheesy dialog, I know. Personally, this piece is a big disappointment for me. First, I was told it was too busy, so I tried to make up for it by having a discernable shading code to it. Well, I hated my first pencil one, so then I decided to try markers with it, a little adventure which almost ended up with me losing one of the pages. And after spending 30 bucks on Copic markers (that was all they had : / ), I still hated it, and decided to go back to pencil.
