He was of Dierkan and Mirthian parents, and back in those days this Was Not Good. Dierkans and Mirthians never mixed. But that is another story.<br /><br />Brooker was dumb - he couldn&#039;t speak. Thus, the residents of his village also thought he was mentally retarded. Eventually he was set aside at the village idiot and ignored, except for the children who were intrigued by this voiceless man.<br /><br />He was taught to read and write. Brooker had a wild imagination and because no one would befriend him, he often spent time fantasizing and contemplating about the world he lived in. Brooker made up lots of stories to explain the world around him. He started writing them out, and some children would read them for entertainment. He came up with stories about everything! Some were based on Trees, which were the antlers of Earth Deer - deer that lived underground. There was the story of Life and Death, and the romance between the two, always connected and sharing their child which was called The Now.<br /><br />He took on the name Delph DeMorte as his pen name.<br /><br />Everything he believed in, was real to him. So much so, that he wished hard he could bring that world into the physical one he lived in.<br /><br />And one day, he got his wish. He lives in a small converted dacha tucked away in palm trees. You can barely make out the brick pathway that takes you to the front door. The hanging oil lanterns do not help much.<br /><br />You knock on the door and there&#039;s no answer. As you turn away thinking it was a waste of time to even come here you hear a fit of coughing from inside and the door opens, the scent of rose and opium weaves it&#039;s way out. Ah good, he&#039;s had his fix, it&#039;s likely he&#039;ll be much easier to deal with. The old man is notoriously known for his addiction to the poppy plant. He tells you that he doesn&#039;t like visitors this late in the evening yet he invites you in.<br /><br />The first thing you notice is how dark it is in the house. It&#039;s warmer in the living area which is where he spends most of his time. There are oil lamps and candles burning. Oh, you forgot. That&#039;s right. He&#039;s a man of the cloth, a Father in Aionism. He&#039;s given up many luxuries that his people have. No electricity, running water, or gas heat. His back to you, he motions towards the corner of the room and tells you to sit. He joins you and puts on the samovar to make tea. There&#039;s a ticking heard all around and as your eyes adjust to the dim lighting you notice an absurd amount of clocks. They are very old looking and very beautiful. The time is 11:32. PM, obviously.<br /><br />He makes small talk with you as he sits on the couch across from the armed chair you&#039;ve settled yourself into. Behind him is a shelf with a pipe, assorted incense burners, and many religious icons. A framed photo of a young girl with long white hair who looks very content catches your eyes. Daughter? Friend? Couldn&#039;t be a love. There is a clock, barely visible, encased in glass that sits behind him. The tea water seems to be taking forever to boil but he is in no hurry at the moment. He gets up to check the kettle and you notice the clock is stopped at 8:04. It must be an heirloom he doesn&#039;t wish to tinker with. You are offered a podstakanniki of tea and turn it down. He glares. Rude of you to turn down a host&#039;s offer. You take it and pray that it&#039;s not poppy seed tea. Sip it. It&#039;s not. You get a better look at him. There are burns on his fingers and lips. Faint wrinkles on his face are the only sign of his age. Why does he keep glancing at a clock?<br /><br />It grows closer to midnight and he fidgets while trying to close up conversation. It&#039;s obvious he wants you to leave. Perhaps an important visitor will be arriving. That girl in the photograph? Was she coming? He&#039;s leaning towards you and studying you as you try to look away. He&#039;s quite the harrowing old man, isn&#039;t he? He&#039;s not talking anymore. The shrill sounds of dozens of clocks going off break the silence and startle you. He doesn&#039;t budge and doesn&#039;t even seem bothered by the sounds. It&#039;s midnight and his countenance freezes. He&#039;s not moving, he&#039;s staring at you with a highly irritated look on his face. You feel hot, the type of heat you feel when someone&#039;s staring you down from behind. The clocks have stopped ringing. The old man is still motionless. A very intimidating gesture. You thank him for the tea and bolt out the door.<br /><br />As you go down the path you look back to take in a last view of the house and it&#039;s resident. The lights have gone out and the smoldering smoke escapes from the windows. It sounded like the call of a rook. The darkness would hide such a dark bird well, so Eve followed his call.<br /><br />She found him sitting on a branch near the headstone of Max&#039;s mother. It didn&#039;t fly away as she approached him, instead he cocked his head as if he had been waiting for her. &quot;Hello,&quot; she reached out to pet his feathered chest but he hopped away.<br /><br />&quot;GO! GO!&quot;<br /><br />The rook swooped down and plucked one of the frost lilies from Eve&#039;s hands, leaving her with an even number of blooms. He stretched his neck towards her to provoke a response to his thieving and when he got none he screeched and flew into her face. She swatted at the hovering rook while he flapped his wings and screamed at her. The commotion drew Max from the other side of the garden. In fact, he inherited everything. Zoyechka was buried in the garden and a monument was put up showing both her and her toddler son. There are also the seven children of Max&#039;s buried there as well... it is indeed a lonely place filled with sadness and death.<br /><br />There are tall stony walls around the entire overgrown garden. The ground is cold and hard and the flowers are small but hardy, but they are there. Most flowers keep growing and thriving despite the tundra terrain where everyone lives.<br /><br />Max goes to the garden often to lament over his mama and children. They were the only ones he loved and feels that no one else should even see the garden and graves. Eve followed him one day undetected and waited for him to leave. She saw him slip the key into the lilies. Once he was gone she took they key and entered the gates. Day after day she went in and took care of the flowers and the ground. The cemetery/garden sprang to life. Max noticed but said nothing.<br /><br />He found her in there one day. He told her that he was unhappy she was in there, but since she was taking such good care of the plants that she could go about as she pleased. Delph is partnered with death, and Lily with life. What creates life? Two people do, with the aide of Lily.<br /><br />There are a few dance masters scattered about their world. Yevtsye Alina, or Eve as most people know her as, has been studying the fertility dances under Sofiya. Sofiya&#039;s dancing has aided many women who were thought unable to have children. She has the power of the Life Goddess in her and Eve seeks to have that same flow and one day have her own apprentice. One who teaches these dances is as sacred as the dances themselves. These teachers are very alluring in their movements and to the eye, but they&#039;re never to be touched. These women are to remain pure and good their whole lives in order to receive Lily&#039;s light in them. Touching them is considered the ultimate sin to Lily.<br /><br />So, hopefully that explains why Mishenka chose Eve to be part of the assassination mission.
