I'm kinda stuck in an art block right now. I did this a couple days ago, while I was experimenting with a new style. I think I like it. I'm trying to make my art more "raw", with more passion in it, as opposed to worrying about proportions and anatomy and stuff all the time. Obviously working on anatomy and proportions is really important to improve as an artist, but I'm trying to make it so I don't have to be *completely* obsessed about that stuff anymore.

Artwork © H.C.Brock, 2007
Do not copy, alter or redistribute without permission.

Tagged as: ballpoint, claws, feline, pen, rawr, snarl, ballpointclawsfelinepenrawrsnarl I can has purple hair y/y? by *firechic http://www.furryartpile.com/view/25393/ Tue, 04 Dec 2007 20:23:26 -0800
Artist commentary
Hmm, I think her head might be like 32048955 times bigger than it should be, but I still like this. I love his characters so much, so I just HAD to draw them, and Tumult was nice enough to agree to do a trade with me. :3

Kay so, it's his fursona, leading along his minions (ZOMBIE CHICKENS OMFG, I used Tumult's design for chickens too, coz he drew them soo cute). And he's trying to look scary for the camera by shining a flashlight on his face. Yeah. It made sense sense when I first thought it up, I swear. o_o It was super fun working on that lighting, even if it isn't perfect.

This drawing went through tons of backgrounds. Where it's black on the sides, it was originally black and orange swirls done in markers, but I didn't like it, so I covered it all in black marker. THEN I put swirls on top of the black with white-out, but I didn't like that either, so after I scanned it I made it black in Photoshop. All the other backgrounds were just too distracting and annoying.

Artwork © H.C.Brock, 2007
Character © Tumult, http://tumult.sheezyart.com

Tagged as: chickens, cow, flashlight, perspective, trade, tumult, chickenscowflashlightperspectivetradetumult Experiment by *firechic http://www.furryartpile.com/view/21130/ Sun, 14 Oct 2007 14:06:05 -0700
Artist commentary
Yeah, so. This was just an experiment. I'm trying to re-create my style, and make it more comic book-ish or something, just a more stylized look.
Anyway, the proportions look kinda off in this, buuuut I like it anyway. Except white-out DOES NOT splatter. I even dripped it onto the paper from like, three feet up, and it still didn't splatter. So I ended up slopping it on there and letting it roll down the paper til it dried. Yeah. :|
And my fursona's fur came out way too red-orange-ish, but I was trying to not use much colored pencil on this, so I just used some white pencil over it and left it alone.

I used markers for like 90% of this, plus white-out, white pencil, and sparkly silver gel pen for the belt buckle, collar spikes, and shoelace holes.

Artwork and character © H.C.Brock, 2007
Do not copy, alter or redistribute without permission.

Tagged as: cougar, female, marker, cougarfemalemarker Going Batty by *firechic http://www.furryartpile.com/view/21045/ Fri, 12 Oct 2007 20:19:42 -0700
Artist commentary
That handsome devil Tuwilliger again (although he didn't turn out as handsome in this drawing as I had originally intended). I just wanted to do a fun little headshot, and I think it came out looking pretty cool. The background/border was especially fun to do. Mmm swirls!

I wanted this to be a 100% marker piece, but I don't have enough colors to really do that, so I ended up using some white pencil and white-out for highlights. Also, in some parts it may look like I used watercolor, but I actually used a marker base, then took a wet paint brush and smudged around the marker ink. The theme is costumes, and I immediately thought of super hero costumes. My fursona (on the left) already had a specific design for her super hero costume, so in this piece Isil and I are off fighting crime together as super heroes. Orrr something.

This was done on 11"x14" bristol paper; I had to scan it in two pieces and put it together in Photoshop, which makes me want to cry because it really wasn't lining up correctly, but I tried. Media used: Micron pens for the lineart, markers, Prismacolor pencils, and white-out for highlights. This took about 7 hours to do, because of the size, and I think that's the most time I've EVER spent on a drawing. And to think, I almost abandoned this half way through. :P

Isil's contest info:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/185305/

Isil's character (on the right) is © Isil:
http://www.furaffinity.net/user/isil/

Artwork and my fursona (on the left) are © H.C.Brock, 2007
Do not copy, alter or redistribute without permission.

Tagged as: car, city, cougar, female, fox, hero, hovership, road, skyscrapers, super, carcitycougarfemalefoxherohovershiproadskyscraperssuper Sleeeepy by *firechic http://www.furryartpile.com/view/20583/ Thu, 04 Oct 2007 19:11:16 -0700
Artist commentary
Hmmm. I did a little bit of markers underneath the watercolors, which was nearly a disaster, coz I wasn't expecting the marker to blend in with the watercolor when I put the water down. That was stupid. XD But I think it turned out alright in the end.
Tracey is a character who is basically my "artistic boyfriend". I've had the idea for this in my head for a while... so I finally put it on paper. I shall explain the symbolism:

-The two arrows represent two losses I've had in the past month; nobody died or anything, but I feel very lonely now, after the losses. The bigger arrow (between the shoulder blades) represents a "bigger" loss, while the smaller one is for a loss that didn't hit me as hard as the first one.
-The rose in her pocket represents hope; something to keep me going in tough times. Roses are my favorite flower, so I usually include them in my more emotional pieces for symbolism.
-Her raised finger is basically saying "Eff you" to the things that cause me pain. It's like saying "You can't knock me down", orrr something. XD
-All the doors down the hallway represent the many paths in one's life. There are so many paths to choose from, it seems like an endless tunnel with endless doors lining the walls, and it's very difficult to choose which one to go through.

As for how I drew it... I used a marker base under most of it, and Prismacolor pencils over the top. I didn't use any rulers for any of it, because I wanted it to have an "imperfect" look to it, especially on the doors. And and, the grey things above her on the ceiling are supposed to be hanging lights, I dunno if they're really recognizable though. :B

Also, the title is from an Escape The Fate song.

Artwork and character © H.C.Brock, 2007
Do not copy, alter or redistribute without permission.

Tagged as: arrows, cougar, doors, featured, female, hallway, leopard, rose, symbolism, arrowscougardoorsfeaturedfemalehallwayleopardrosesymbolism Supa Heroz by *firechic http://www.furryartpile.com/view/15034/ Wed, 18 Jul 2007 20:42:11 -0700
Artist commentary
Me and my super hero accomplice Sam, out to rid the world of evil which, in this case, is an evil lava demon. OH NOEZ.

I'm on the right, with the mechanical wings, Sam's on the left in all her glowly goodness, and the demon is in front of us, of course. The outfit I'm wearing is officially my super hero uniform. I drew it once before in another picture, and I brought it back for this one too. Red + black = love. My fursona is a cougar, and Sam's animal form is a weiner dog, coz I always draw her as one (partially coz she has a pet weiner doggy). I guess Sam's powers are something along the lines of psychic stuff (think Jean Grey from X-Men), I'm not entirely sure. And my power is fire, of course, coz fire is just cool.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I really like this. It seems a bit crowded to me, like there's just too much STUFF in there (maybe it would have been better had I not drawn in the wings?). The whole thing was supposed to look like it was from a comic book, but I think I need to work on my comic book-ness.

The media I used on this waaaas: black Sharpies for the outlines, painted ink for the base colors (ink from a bottle, painted with a small paint brush), Prismacolor pencils, and some colored Sharpies for touch-ups.

CRITIQUES ARE WELCOME.

Artwork and fursona © H.C.Brock, 2007
Do not copy, alter or redistribute without permission.

Tagged as: cougar, daschund, female, hero, lion, mountain, puma, super, cougardaschundfemaleherolionmountainpumasuper Saber-toothed cougar by *firechic http://www.furryartpile.com/view/15033/ Wed, 18 Jul 2007 20:32:17 -0700
Artist commentary
This was a re-do of an older piece I did. I really liked the original, but I thought it could be better, so I redrew it. It was also a good practice piece for colored pencils; this entire drawing is 100% colored pencils, no ink in it whatsoever. I'm really pleased with the fur. :3

Anyway, this is my fursona's demon form, a saber-toothed cougar (and yes, I know they're not a real animal). The orbs on her temples symbolize my migraines. When the orbs glow red, she's angry and in a terrible fury, but when they glow blue, she's calm and content. And apparently she can control weather? Hence the perfectly placed thunder cloud above the unfortunately placed tree. I'm not sure if I want to keep the concept of controling weather, but it just happened to be a good idea for this piece in particular.

Artwork and character © H.C.Brock, 2007
Do not copy, alter or redistribute without permission.

Tagged as: cougar, demon, female, lion, mountain, puma, saber, tooth, cougardemonfemalelionmountainpumasabertooth Dance Til Your Legs Fall Off by *firechic http://www.furryartpile.com/view/15032/ Wed, 18 Jul 2007 20:22:46 -0700
Artist commentary
Hooray, my first post.
