Nothing could've survived that! this whole place has been burnt up!"

With a smile Simba gently swiped the ground with a paw.

"Look here Kiara. Even though the earth has been scorched by lightning, life can still prosper. In fact--"

Simba lifted his paw to reveal a tiny flower sticking out of the ashes.

"-This little flower will bloom quite nicely. Although some of the grasses and trees were destroyed in the fire, their ashes will replenish the earth and help this flower grow up to be big and strong. It's all a part of the great circle of life."

Kiara tilted her head, "What's that?"

With another smile, Simba continued.

"Well Kiara, let me tell you something that my father told me..."

_______________________________________________________

Well, it's definitely not as good as the other TLK pic I did, but I wanted more practice at drawing clouds and pride rock... I just can't seem to get it right all the time. Also, I screwed up on Simba's foreshortening and he looks too disproportionate. It didn't look as bad in the outline, but the more I look at it the more flaws I see.... And it is_ definitely _the best Broadway play that I've ever seen!

This movie really shaped the way I am as an artist by helping me develop my own style, and it's always helped me personally too. It really solidified my deep respect for nature "from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope", and (when I was young) really opened my eyes to big questions like dealing with death, love, and responsibility.

Needless to say, I cherish this movie, and it's one of the few things that I'll happily draw fanart for! Not willing to resign himself to such a gruesome fate, the hunter snatched up his weapons and let fly a volley of arrows, killing several of his beloved hounds, all of which he had raised from their births.

Try as he might, the awkwardness of his cursed form, and the physical and emotional pain took it's toll, and the once proud hunter fell victim to his own companions.

This is truly a testament to the cruelty of Gods ... turning predator into prey... hunter into the hunted over something as trivial as a little "peek".

Tagged as: acidic, actaeon, action, blood, canine, cervine, deer, dog, forest, greek, mature, myth, squirrelydoom, stag, acidicactaeonactionbloodcaninecervinedeerdogforestgreekmaturemythsquirrelydoomstag Elementalist - Comission for Dragonphlu by *squirrelydoom http://www.furryartpile.com/view/34546/ Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:41:16 -0700
Artist commentary
http://Furaffinity.net/user/acidic

Another commission for dragonphlu on FA.

I think it turned out pretty cool!

Tagged as: acidic, dragon, eastern, elementalist, guildwars, magic, squirrelydoom, wings, acidicdragoneasternelementalistguildwarsmagicsquirrelydoomwings Commission - Zeis and Rys by *squirrelydoom http://www.furryartpile.com/view/34306/ Mon, 21 Apr 2008 19:50:51 -0700
Artist commentary
Another commission.

If you're interested check here --> http://www.furaffinity.net/user/info/acidic/

I'm currently only accepting sketch and line-art commissions for 10$ and 15$ respectfully (5$ and 10$ for character busts only).

Tagged as: acidic, black, day, gay, greek, leopard, lion, love, male, mature, melanistic, night, romantic, squirrelydoom, acidicblackdaygaygreekleopardlionlovemalematuremelanisticnightromanticsquirrelydoom Illusionist - For Dragonphlu by *squirrelydoom http://www.furryartpile.com/view/34001/ Thu, 17 Apr 2008 13:03:49 -0700
Artist commentary
A commission I drew for Dragonphlu --> http://www.furaffinity.net/user/dragonphlu

I really had fun with this! Another picture done :D And ahead of schedule too!

This cheerful fellow is my new fursona thing... Acid (aka Cid)!

I developed his name while I was reading a little on Sigmund Freud's analysis of human personalities and how we tend to be psychologically split into 3 parts.

Here is the really dumbed down version of it all...

The Superego is suposed to be the rational and logical side, the Ego is our normal self, and the Id is the passion driven and instinctual side. Whatever the Id wants the Id gets... The Id thrives on the basic hierarchy of needs and wants... rationalism be damned... I liked this concept so much that I developed a character around the whole theory, Acid the Nekomata.

The nekomata is a Japanese mythical monster cat that tends to trouble people and is as witty as the famous kitsune. Cats were thought to have tails that fork in two once they reach a certain age, and it is around that time that they get spooky powers, like the ability to transform into human shape and mess with the recently deceased (hence the graveyard). This magical beast also explains the origins of the Japanese Bobtail purebred cat. The obvious reason being that fearful citizens would bob the tails of their pet cats in order to prevent them from becoming a bakeneko/nekomata. Eventually, through artificial selection and breeding, the bobtail was created.

Here endeth the lesson ^_^

So lets talk about his character! He is a native to Flea's world (There will be more characters to come) and has made friends with Flea and her cohorts. However he is somewhat unstable... Where Flea represents my artistic side, Acid represents my cynical, misanthropic, and crazy side...

Have you ever wanted to kill the person who's cellphone goes off in a movie theater? Have you ever wanted to duct tape a baby's mouth shut just so it will stop crying? Have you ever wanted to just listen to the little devil on your shoulder and do what you know is wrong... to say "Fuck You!" to the people you hate and to say "I wanna fuck you!" to the people you love?

That is Acid...

Oh yes! Before I forget, He has a thing for mushrooms! Why you ask? Because I have a thing for mushrooms! I don't need some stupid historical background for everything XD

Also, a gold star to anyone who can identify the shrooms under Acid's right foot! And to start it off, I'm going to "create" a whole new cast of characters! I've actually had the character, Flea, for some time now... although she wasn't always a rat... or furry... or drawn at all until just a few days ago!

Anyway, I've always had a love for antiheroes and villains, and for the longest time I've wanted to create a few of my own :D So here is a little info on Flea!

When she was born, she was wrongfully labeled as a possible plague carrier, and suffered a rather horrendous series of unfortunate events. She was abandoned by her parents, subjected to rigorous testing and experimentation, and was ostracized by every other individual she met. Even when she was cleared of any possible infection, the stigma never left.

Although you wouldn't know it by looking at her or by talking to her... she is actually a very angry individual. However instead of taking it out on people, she manages to express herself through graffiti and vandalism. Despite her somewhat misanthropic attitude, she does have a soft side for the underdogs... She sympathizes with other "outcasts" and will often lend a hand to those that don't fit in with normal society.

In the end, her ultimate goal is to find her parents... And once she finds them... well, let's just say that it won't be all hugs and kisses.

More antiheroes to come!

Anyway, on to the picture! Overall I'm happy with how it came out :) the tie-dye shirt was definitely a new thing to try, and I'm very happy with the results. Also this was the first time I've ever attempted any kind of graffiti style art, and I must say that I could probably do better with more practice... Another thing that I have mixed feelings about is just the composition in general. Although I loved how the original sketch looked, there seems to be something wrong with this finished pic. I think its the fact that the depth of field isn't noticeable enough, or maybe the contrast between the gray alley and the colorful art is too brilliant...

I can't really pin my finger on it... Anyway, I hope you all enjoy it!

Any comments, as always, are greatly appreciated :)

Oh and before I forget, if anyone starts wondering why she doesn't have a mask on, or why she looks so clean, the answer lies in that bag she's carrying. My last "Big Project" of this year, and a Christmas present for my friend and supervisor at BCR, Scott. in 2001 he lost a very close friend, Fleetwood the cougar, and recently was able to release his ashes amongst the Colorado wilderness. The story is quite touching and I promised to do my best to illustrate the moment.

I really can't say much else that already has been said, so I encourage you to read the follow passages written by the operations manager of Big Cat Rescue, Scott Lope.

From Fleetwood's Bio Page

Male Cougar

Date of Birth: 1997-2001

In early July of 2007 I was fortunate enough to spend a week in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. This trip was more than just a much needed vacation, it also enabled me to fulfill a commitment made six years ago. This commitment was a promise made to a cougar named Fleetwood, a cougar who was born in a cage, lived his entire life in a cage, and died in a cage.

Fleetwood was born in 1997 at Big Cat Rescue, then known as WildLife On Easy Street. His birth was not intentional, but back in the pre-Big Cat Rescue days, there were far more cats than enclosures and unplanned babies did happen. Fleetwood and his sister Enya were adorable as are all cougar cubs and as all cougar cubs do, they quickly grew out of the cute and cuddly stage and into the role of the largest feline hunter in North America.

Fleetwood and Enya were favorites at the sanctuary of both volunteers and guests. Fleetwood had a tendency to eat every weird thing he could find and not once but two times had to have surgery to remove such objects. Despite his eating habits, Flreetwood grew up to be a robust, healthy cougar of over 150 lbs.

He had a curious characteristic as well, his head was always cocked to one side as if he was pondering what to do next. Tragically in June of 2001, Fleetwood died unexpectedly due to a severe drug reaction after a routine medical procedure to remove sutures. Everyone who knew Fleetwood was devastated and after searching the cage a few times, his puzzled sister Enya seemed to know he wasn’t coming back.

Fleetwood was cremated and a pact was made, since he was never free in life, Fleetwood would rest eternally in the wild where he truly belonged. As the years passed and efforts to place Fleetwood’s ashes in the Everglades proved unfeasible, I never forgot the promise made so long ago. When I had the chance to go camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains, I knew this was prime cougar habitat and my one chance for Fleetwood.

On my second day in Colorado, I hiked through the mountains to a remote Alpine lake. Along the way on the craggy rocky slopes, I could imagine Fleetwood stalking the many elk and mule deer that walked that very trail. Near the top stood a lone tree on a rocky outcrop and I knew I had found the perfect spot. Against a brilliant blue sky in the chilly morning air, I released Fleetwood’s ashes to the wind. As they drifted away, I could see Fleetwood leaping over the rocks and bounding into the forest below. With tears in my eyes and my mission accomplished, I knew I could enjoy the rest of my trip.

When I returned to the sanctuary the next week and approached Enya’s enclosure. She ran over to greet me as usual, but her voice sounded a little different. Her “chirps” were faster and higher pitched. I think she knew…Fleetwood was finally free.

Operations Manager, Scott Lope

Tagged as: animal, big, cat, cougar, fleetwood, freedom, lion, mountain, nonanthro, panther, puma, rescue, squirrelydoom, animalbigcatcougarfleetwoodfreedomlionmountainnonanthropantherpumarescuesquirrelydoom Kali Decan - Character Study by *squirrelydoom http://www.furryartpile.com/view/21138/ Sun, 14 Oct 2007 17:09:58 -0700
Artist commentary
One of my many characters in a hopeful story setting of mine. Early this morning the order went out across the resistance that the "reclamation" would begin in only a few hours, and that we should all be well prepared for the upcoming conflict... Funny, I've spent the last 5 years running drills and simulations, and yet I still can't help but feel terrified about what we are about to do. My assignment is to follow 1st battalion into Los Angeles, after the initial bombardment, and hold the city until dawn and wait for reinforcements. I haven't been in LA ever since the first Sub-Human Registration and Assignment (SRA) went into action...

Anyway, it’s almost midnight; I can hear the engines of the sub kicking in, and the radio chatter echoing through the halls. Honestly, It will be worth invading LA just to get out of this tin can! The constant drumming of the engines, lack of sunlight, and smell of grease and dirty oil is enough to drive anyone crazy. Some furs have actually lived for months in these subs...

Damn it! I'll have to cut this message short. the red-lights are all lit up, and the sub is shaking like crazy! I can barely stand up straight... Sea mines, artillery... incoming or outgoing I don't know!

The radios are blaring like crazy I can barely make out what everyone is saying... All I could hear was one simple message.

*Kkrrzzzz-*"We're about to" *-zzzz-* "make landfall..."

-- Log 23 November 20, 2078
-- We've taken the city! Although it definitely took a lot longer than originally expected. The causalities, sadly, have been extreme... Out of the 10'000 or so invasion force, there are only about 700 of us who are not dead or injured, and it's only a matter of time before the humans retaliate. Before they retreated however, they shut down all the power and running water, and ransacked most of the hospitals. We barely have enough ammunition to last a couple more hours, and the wounded are without any medical supplies. Hell, even I got hit pretty bad... some plasma discharge from an incendiary shell torched the fur off my right foot and burned me pretty badly... That shit melted through my boot in less than a second... I was lucky though, I saw one APC take a direct hit by one of those plasma shells, and I made the mistake of looking for survivors in the wreckage. I don't think I'll ever eat again after what I saw... and smelt... in there...

I can hear the faint sound of more plasma charges going off in the distance. and the chorus of moans and screams from the wounded makes my fur stand on end. I've never even had nightmares this horrible!

Oh God, I hope the air support arrives soon...

-- Supplemental
- At 12:00 the "Falcons" arrived and created an overwatch around the city, but the humans have started to set up anti-aircraft stations near the border... They won't put up too much of a fight, and we will eventually push them back. Once the city is fully secure LA will become our new central command center... Regardless of our successes however, rumors are spreading about the other invasions, and that the humans actually responded by firing the "Morning Star" orbital! Why they would obliterate their own cities even when faced with enemy occupation is beyond me, but I can't help but fear that these rumors might be true and LA might be targeted next... At least reinforcements are one the way.

-- Supplemental 2
-- It's now 18:32 and all seems quite. The Anti Aircraft resistance has been silenced by our artillery, and the "reclamation" of Los Angeles has been successful. In fact, as I record this message, General Orion has already made landfall and is ordering the engineering crews to organize a suitable command center. Massive amounts of reinforcements and equipment have also arrived, and LA is now a fortress!

I just received my next assignment too… I'll be leaving the relative safety of the city in a few days in order to help support the assault on Eastern Russia... Apparently we’ve run into some resistance in the Koryak Mts. near the town of Anadyr... Strange, that they would need more help to take such a small town. I wonder what's going on up there?

This is Kali Decan, signing off
--End transmission

Well here is a little backstory that I've been fiddling with! Nothing too specific but it kinda gives out some hints as to what the setting and period are, as well as to some speculation as to what both sides are thinking. As for the picture, I'm glad that it's finished, and I'm pretty happy with the results! I do think her neck is a little too long, but I don't think this distracts from the picture much... if at all. So, yeah, I might actually take the time out to write up a full story, and eventually illustrate it!

Anyway, I finally figured out a name for her too! Kalimau (Kali) Decan. Her name is actually based off the colloquial name for the clouded leopard, "Harimau Dahan" which translated to "tree/branch tiger". Plus I have a friend named Cali who is a pretty strong-willed and independent person... Which suits this character's personality quite well :)

Anyway, that's all for now, I hope you guys like it!

Tagged as: apocalypse, clouded, feline, leopard, pinup, soldier, squirrelydoom, war, apocalypsecloudedfelineleopardpinupsoldiersquirrelydoomwar Fish Market by *squirrelydoom http://www.furryartpile.com/view/19087/ Sat, 01 Sep 2007 14:12:31 -0700
Artist commentary
A repost from FA!

If you're curious, I spent about 1 month creating this from concept sketches to the finished product. Composing of well over 50 layers, this picture reached a staggering 1.67 gigabytes on my computer at 600 DPI with a resolution of 4800 x 6000 pixels. It is definitely my largest work to date!

Honestly, I kind of have some mixed feelings about how the finished piece turned out. On one hand I think it looks great like this! I tried a ton of new techniques and the challenges were great! I also think that this is a major improvement over most of my older (more static) works.

On the Other hand, I did have a lot more planned for this picture (including more buildings, details...etc) but realized that these extra things would've taken too much time, or are currently way out of my skill range.

Overall though, I'm very happy with this! And I hope that you all enjoy it too :)

Please keep in mind too that I worked REALLY hard on this, and although critiques are greatly appreciated, I'm probably not going to touch this picture up at all. She looks a little dumb... other than that, I'm pretty pleased with the picture.

Tagged as: elma, erma, eruma, gxp, lightsaber, space, squirrelydoom, tenchi, elmaermaerumagxplightsaberspacesquirrelydoomtenchi A Beautiful View by *squirrelydoom http://www.furryartpile.com/view/18113/ Mon, 13 Aug 2007 15:09:27 -0700
Artist commentary
Another upload from FA...

Now, we're getting to my more current works :)

I drew this a little over a month ago, and I think my female anatomy has seriously improved since my earlier pictures! About a year and a half ago, 3 baby cougars (2 boys and a girl) were orphaned when a hunter shot their mother in Idaho. Without a mother the babies would not have survived, and since Big Cat Rescue had the space and finances available, we decided to take them in. Around the same time these babies came to Big Cat, I also became a volunteer their, so I had the privilege of watching these guys grow up.

Now they are much bigger (each over 100 pounds) and their personalities have definitely developed. It's kinda funny too that many of the volunteers can not tell these guys apart, but I sure can :)

If you are curious and want to see the stars of this picture in real life, check out these videos!

(the cubs playing around)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeMELDVyKaM

(Scott goes in with the cubs for the last time to weigh t
