Delusions Of Grandeur

Posted 9 months ago

Per my sister's recent unemployment, she has confided in me her predicament involving her outstanding debt on her student loans. I informed her I would relay yet another loan to her that she can handle her expenses till she finds work again. I also informed her that I would not relay anymore money to her and that if things continue to not work out that she is going to have to come straight with the parents.

I have to say I am disappointed with my sister. Not in that she has lost her job; I lose jobs left and right and have suffered lengthy periods of unemployment. Rather, I am disappointed in how she is approaching the very reason she went to college in the first place. She took a big risk and invested a lot to go to a four year school and get her Bachelors. She aspires to be a writer and that's fine, but what has she accomplished? And I tell her, "Join one of my art sites. Get a job writing columns. Write short stories. Do something small so that you can work your way up. Get yourself noticed so that people start to know your name and you can even refine yourself through their critiques." No. No, she has a grandiose scheme; I call it her Harry Potter dream. She wants to write one novel, get rich and famous for writing it, and direct the movie version of it.

You know, I had delusions of grandeur, too. I thought that I was going to go through the whole college scene, become an accountant, gain substantial wealth, and in my spare time single-handedly produce stunning animation that would put Gerald Scarfe to shame. Talk about unrealistic. That was long before my realization that I will never be an accountant. That was long before my realization that drawing just one image is an arduous task in itself. And it almost seems my dreams have been crushed to make room for the mundane task of drafting endless AutoCAD permits for the phone company. Well, there still needs to be room for dreams and for what I like, but I will not approach it unrealistically.

I hope my sister can return to a work situation soon and I also hope she will learn to approach her aspiritions more conservatively and reasonably and also make better use of her time; playing World of Warcraft as much as she does is not productive and I interpret watching MTV as a sign of unintelligence. To the rest of you, always make room for what you like to do and for what you need to do. For all your lives, people have been putting you down for your creativity and your desire to be different, but do not succumb.

Thank you for visiting.

Very true MP... I've been in many situations where I've had to do what needed to be done... I didn't like it, but I did it because it needed to be done.

I see the same thing as you describe in my kids every day. My youngest son was recently offered a job with Disney. Yeah, the job wasn't glamorous, but it was a foot in the door. I have a number of buddies who are in the Imagineering department with Disney. They work your ass off, but they are loyal to their employees and you can rise as high as your talents can take you... Did my kid take the job? No. He's holding out for a higher paying job with a lower stress level and more free time... Arrgh!

Good luck to your sister, but, as you say, sometimes your dreams have to take a back seat to reality.

Hmm, I didn't know you had kids!

I got to be really sympathetic to you, with your kid tossing an opportunity like that! I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat! I hope your son exercises a little more wisdom the next time an opportunity comes up.

Thanks so much for your input. I hope things do turn around for my sister as well. As for myself, I need to keep a perspective on the difference between being responsible and being a defeatist.

        MP,
Yup... Got two boys, affectionately called Cain and Abel, since they were always trying to kill one another when they were younger... Now, with a little more maturity under their belts, they are the best of friends...

Yeah, I tried to talk the younger of the two into going for Disney, but he didn't want the "stress." Sheesh... One of these days he'll understand that adult life is one stressful situation after another, either real or imagined. But then, he doesn't seem to want any part of growing up at this point either and has even gone so far as telling me "I wish that I didn't have to get a job..." Arrgh!

Anyway, thanx for the response and sincere best wishes to your sister. I hope she does find her dream... Hope things go well for you too!
