this doesn't sound 'fair' to me..

awhile ago my stepdad told me that he would buy me a macbook. hot damn right? yeah, i thought it was pretty cool too. so tonight i asked him if he was still going to buy me one. what does he say? that he'll buy me one, but my YOUNGER SISTER gets my laptop. she's 14, an idiot, no common sense, dumber than rocks in a box, etc. it would end up on her floor, stepped on, probably completely destroyed within 11 minutes. not to mention that if it doesn't do something she wants it to right away she'd start hitting the keyboard like she does w/ my mom's computer (her comp is old and slow and my sister's even more impatient than me).

now, giving her my laptop would not be such a big deal if i hadn't spent 4 1/2 paychecks buying it last summer. 4 1/2 out of 8 paychecks (summer job). plus another 300 for extra RAM and a new 120GB hard drive. i also have a zune(that i also bought myself) that won't run on a mac, obviously. and all my games. yeah a mac is a lot more than my little Dell. but i PAID for it, and everything for it myself. i'm not just going to give it to my sister. especially when i know it'll be destroyed.

ok i'm done. rant over.

    It reads like a rather fair trade to me, and I suppose that's the problem here. Your journal leaves me to assume that when your stepfather brought up getting you a mac, you might have been left to assume it would be a no strings gift from him, but now he's cleared the terms that it's really a trade. Your stepfather gives you a new computer, and in exchange you hand the older one down to your younger sister. I can see why you wouldn't be willing to do that, considering the laptop you have was something that you earned, not to mention the whole issues regarding peripherals like your Zune, and stuff. If he knows you're not interested in the trade, and still wants your sister to have a computer too, why not buy her the macbook instead?

      he told me he would buy me the mac at least a year before i bought my dell. even after i bought it he told me that he would still buy me the mac, and understood that i had certain things on my pc that won't run on mac. he agreed that i should keep it so that my mac hard drive wasn't used for music/videos and whatever else. i would have it to run my graphics programs. the only condition on me getting the mac was that i went to college for something i could use it for like graphic design, which i planned on doing anyway.

        Now that's the sort of specifics you should be sharing when trying to communicate a point to folks, but it really doesn't change much. So far it still reads like the best way you're going to get a mac on your terms is for you buy one for yourself, difficult as it maybe. And from my last look at the mac store offers, unless you've got a spare monitor, keyboard, and mouse just laying around, it's still cheaper getting a mac laptop, than a mac desktop system, which I've got to admit is an odd reverse from other companies. Either way, best of luck to you on your Mac hunt.
