Artist commentary

You may have seen this guy sitting on the roof of a restaurant when you got some fries and a hot dog at a Crescent Beach snack shack. You take your food and friends down to a bench and start to snack while talking to said friends. You watch some of the others playing out on the sand bars in front of you. It is low tide and some are building sand castles, playing frisbee or taking the boat out into the strait. On this warm day Haben exercises great patience as he waits for an opportunity to grab a free meal. If you take your attention off your picnic lunch then chances are it will be gone when you look back. This big Heron would swoop down and grab it right off your table/blanket and fly off to enjoy it.
Those Pacific Great Blue Herons may be rather good at thieving because they are ..." smarter than the aaaverage bird. "

The scene presented behind Haben is a real place, Crescent Beach. I live about 4 miles away from this location. When the tide goes out there are lots of sandbars to walk out on. The land mass on the top part of the picture across the water is South Delta and Tsawassen. I figure that Haben would be 12 to 14 feet tall when using the average human as a base size template. The long legs and neck would make this bird rather huge...his wing span would be something to see too!
